Stansted Tennis Club

September 2017 enewsletter

Don’t forget to have a go at the tennis quiz at the end of this newsletter. There will be a prize for the winning entry!

This adult doubles tournament will be taking place a week on Sunday (1st October), starting at 9am. The entry list will be removed from the clubhouse tomorrow, so that catering arrangements can be made in good time.

Finals’ Day will be held at Henham Tennis Club this Saturday (23rd September). Please try to support on the day if you are free.

This will be held at Debbie’s house on Friday 6th October at 7pm. If you have anything you would like to relay to the committee prior to the meeting, please either contact a committee member directly or use the suggestion box in the clubhouse. We are still very keen to recruit any members who would like to support us by becoming a “Friend of the Committee”. Please get in touch if you would like to volunteer.

Stansted Tennis Club Finals’ Day was held on Sunday 10th September. The event was well supported by spectators, even if they had to use blankets to keep warm whilst watching.
The morning started with both singles finals being played on adjacent courts. in the Ladies’ Singles, Fiona Pye achieved her first singles win, beating Lisa King 6-2 6-2. Meanwhile, in the Men’s Singles final, Ross Armorgie also won his first singles title, beating last year’s winner, Chris Hollis 6-4 6-3 in a match of contrasting styles. The next matches on court were the Ladies’ and Men’s Doubles finals. In a very tense match, especially towards the conclusion, Lisa King and Fiona Pye were victorious in the Ladies’ Doubles, beating Karen Ainsworth and Carol Cook, 6-3 6-4. The Men’s Doubles Final was a speedier affair, with brothers Brad and Ross Armorgie defeating Jon Budd and Simon Fox, last year’s beaten finalists, 6-3 6-1. The last final of the day was the Mixed Doubles final, which was probably the most hotly-contested of the finals.Martyn Taplin and Daphne Lunnon came out on top, beating Phil Berry and Lisa King 7-5 6-3. The trophies were presented by Club President, Janet Hollis and Club Chairman, Chris Hollis. The last trophy to be presented, was the Roger Loveday trophy, which is voted for by the committee and presented to the member who is the most-improved in the club. This year’s winner was Clare Murfitt.

The final date for all ladder matches to be played is Friday 20th October. This means that the deadline for arranging all doubles ladder matches is Friday 22nd September (THIS FRIDAY). The deadline for arranging all singles ladder matches is Friday 29th September.

The next Ladies’ Night will be on Monday  9th October starting at 7pm. All ladies welcome!

The rearranged date for this tournament is now Sunday 15th October, starting at 1pm. Please sign up on the notice in the clubhouse if you would like to play.

Six local clubs participated in this tournament on Sunday 27th August. Congratulations to “Team Stansted” who finished third overall. A special mention to Fiona Pye and Lisa King who came top in the Ladies’ Doubles and to Simon Playfair and Daphne Lunnon who were runners up in the Mixed Doubles.

10 ladies took part in this doubles tournament on Friday 1st September. Congratulations to the trophy winners, Clare Murfitt and Fiona Pye, who beat Karen Ainsworth and Carol Cook 6-4 in the final. A bring and share lunch was enjoyed by the competitors after the tournament.

I know it’s very early, but a reminder that the 2018 Wimbledon Ballot opened today. You have until February to “opt in”, but best to do it now to stop my nagging emails later on. Remember, the more STC members who opt in, the more tickets we will be allocated for our STC ballot next year. Simply go to the LTA website and follow instructions. If you are not already a British Tennis Member(BTM), you will need to register on the LTA website and then opt in. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me.
