2023 Club Championship Results (so far)

Finals’ Day for Stansted Tennis Club’s annual knockout tournament was played on Sunday 17 September 2023.  Although we were glad not to play in the 32 degree heat of the previous Sunday, the weather a week later got the better of us, with play being abandoned half way through due to rain.

Four events were completed before the rain.

In the Ladies’ Singles event, Sandra Ayres beat defending champion Daphne Lunnon in a two hour three setter 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

In the Men’s Singles event, new member James Thorpe beat defending champion Jon Purshouse in another two hour three setter epic 6-1, 6-7, 6-4.

Father and son duo Andy and Sam Constantinou retained their title in the Men’s Doubles, beating John Stone and James Thorpe, 6-2, 6-1.

In the Mixed Doubles Plate tournament, Louise Chalk and Mark Harris beat husband and wife combo, Kate and Paul Hucknall 6-1, 6-1.

Thanks to match umpires Phil Berry, Gail Hogg, Jamie Hogg and Debbie Lane for overseeing proceedings. And thanks to so many members that helped in various ways from cleaning courts, to erecting gazebo, catering, etc. Too many names to mention.

Family and friends who came to watch and support the players were treated to a fantastic array of food, culminating in a barbecue and Pimms later in the afternoon, fortunately in the shelter of a large gazebo.

The remaining three events (Ladies’ Doubles, Mixed Doubles and Men’s Singles Plate) will be played by mutual arrangement between the players over the course of the next three weeks.
