CLUB TOURNAMENT 2017:
Stansted Tennis Club Finals’ Day was held on Sunday 10th September. The event was well supported by spectators, even if they had to use blankets to keep warm whilst watching.
The morning started with both singles finals being played on adjacent courts. in the Ladies’ Singles, Fiona Pye achieved her first singles win, beating Lisa King 6-2 6-2. Meanwhile, in the Men’s Singles final, Ross Armorgie also won his first singles title, beating last year’s winner, Chris Hollis 6-4 6-3 in a match of contrasting styles. The next matches on court were the Ladies’ and Men’s Doubles finals. In a very tense match, especially towards the conclusion, Lisa King and Fiona Pye were victorious in the Ladies’ Doubles, beating Karen Ainsworth and Carol Cook, 6-3 6-4. The Men’s Doubles Final was a speedier affair, with brothers Brad and Ross Armorgie defeating Jon Budd and Simon Fox, last year’s beaten finalists, 6-3 6-1. The last final of the day was the Mixed Doubles final, which was probably the most hotly-contested of the finals.Martyn Taplin and Daphne Lunnon came out on top, beating Phil Berry and Lisa King 7-5 6-3. The trophies were presented by Club President, Janet Hollis and Club Chairman, Chris Hollis. The last trophy to be presented, was the Roger Loveday trophy, which is voted for by the committee and presented to the member who is the most-improved in the club. This year’s winner was Clare Murfitt.
