Stansted Tennis Club

October 2017 enewsletter

Don’t forget to have a go at the tennis quiz at the end of this newsletter. There will be a prize for the winning entry!

PAT CLOWER:
Following the announcement of Honorary Member, Pat Clower’s death last week, several members have asked about her funeral arrangements. I can confirm that Pat’s funeral will take place at 11.30am on Monday 6th November at St.John’s Church, Stansted.

FLOODLIGHT TOKENS:
We are getting quite low on floodlight tokens, so please spare a few moments and have a look around for any you might have lying around at home. If you are not intending to use them, it would be great if you could return them to either myself, Fiona Pye or Jan Hollis. Don’t forget they are worth £2 each.

ACCIDENT BOOK:
Should you be unfortunate enough to have an accident whilst playing tennis on STC’s courts, please remember to fill out full details in the Accident Book, which is situated above the First Aid Box in the Clubhouse.

VISITORS:
Please remember that only STC members who are listed as members on your STC membership form are eligible to use the courts. Family members who are NOT listed are NOT entitled to play on the courts. Members are able to bring a visitor up to three times, after which that visitor needs to join the Club. If you do bring a visitor to play, please enter details on the small brown envelope and enclose the correct fee. The brown envelopes can be found inside the outside noticeboard.

MIX “N” MATCH TOURNAMENT:
The draw is now up and all those taking part need to make sure their first round matches have been arranged and played by Friday 10th November. Thank you to those involved in the first three matches to have been completed already. Please let me know as soon as you encounter a problem in arranging a match.

CAYLESS CHILLI TOURNAMENT:
Unfortunately, this tournament had to be cancelled due to poor weather on Sunday 1st October. The new date will be Sunday 5th November, 9.00am for a 9.30am start. We have 8 ladies and 8 men down to play on the rearranged date.

HOSPITAL CUP:
Many congratulations to Ross Armorgie who, representing STC, won the Men’s Singles title over at Henham Tennis Club on Saturday 23rd September. A big thank you to all STC members who supported by spectating on the day.

NEXT COMMITTEE MEETING
This will be held at Debbie’s house on Friday 24th November at 7pm. If you have anything you would like to relay to the committee prior to the meeting, please either contact a committee member directly or use the suggestion box in the clubhouse. We are still very keen to recruit any members who would like to support us by becoming a “Friend of the Committee”. Please get in touch if you would like to volunteer.

LADDERS:
The ladders are now complete and all the results will be announced very soon. Thank you to everyone who took part, there were a lot of matches played over the summer months. I would be very interested to receive feedback from any members who took part with suggestions for next year. For example, do players prefer a final set championship tie-break or would you rather play a full long set? Is the length of time after making a challenge appropriate? When making a challenge, is three players above fair, or should it be decreased or increased? I’m sure you can think of other questions, and I would love to hear them.

LADIES’ NIGHT:
The next Ladies’ Night will be on Monday 13th November starting at 7pm. All ladies welcome!

WILBY TOURNAMENT:
12 players took part in this rearranged adult doubles tournament on Sunday 15th October. Congratulations to the winners, Joe Hollis and Diane Brown, who defeated Rick Lim and Debbie Lane 6-1 in the final. A sumptuous tea was enjoyed by players and spectators after the tournament.

WIMBLEDON BALLOT:
Many thanks to the 37 STC members who have already “opted in” for next year’s Wimbledon ballot. If you have not yet done so, please visit the LTA website and “opt in” – it only takes a few clicks of the mouse. If you are not already a BTM (British Tennis Member), you will need to register on the LTA website and then “opt in”. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. Don’t forget, if you have not “opted in” you will not be eligible for next year’s STC ballot for Wimbledon tickets. The more members who “opt in”, the more Wimbledon tickets we will be allocated by the LTA.

ESSEX SMALL CLUB LEAGUE RESULTS:
Thanks to Debbie, Fiona and Caroline who attended the winter fixtures meeting last week over at Henham. Everyone who plays in the league should by now have information about all matches which involve STC for the coming season.

Ladies’ Premier:

Ladies’ 3:
Stansted 2 Steubing 14
